Middleburg, Virginia

Middleburg, VA

The Middleburg, Virginia workshop, held in 1998, was the first in the state. At this convening, the hallmark Your Town workshop departed from the conventional hypothetical regional town model and, instead, invited participants to work on real Middleburg design issues.

The two-day workshop, hosted from January 5-6, was funded and presented by the Middleburg Town Council, with guest presenters including experienced staff from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and urban design experts from nearby Virginia and Maryland small towns. Over 30 regional civic leaders gathered for the convening. Opening programming included design process lectures, graphic skills workshops, and case study presentation, while the culminating Your Town workshop focused on real-world, Middleburg-specific design problems related to managing natural resources and historic character of the rural town in the face of rapid subdivision developments in nearby Loudoun County.
