The Hana workshop was unusual in its focus on the Native Hawaiian community and the significant cultural heritage of East Maui.

The Your Town workshop conducted in Hana, Hawaii May 18-20, 2000 was an overwhelming success. Not only did the workshop address a new hybrid Your Town model addressing "real world" problems, but it also significantly engaged and empowered a native peoples group. As a result of three full days of discussion, debate and ceremony, Native Hawaiian leaders in the communities of East Maui laid the groundwork for a follow-up meeting in June to continue the Your Town process and investigate the formal designation of East Maui as a heritage area. One participant, Carl Lindquist, noted at the conclusion of the workshop that "this was the most significant event to occur in the last thirty years."
