The workshop was hosted from July 14-15 by the School of Environmental Design at the University of Georgia, the program’s official Southeast Regional Your Town Center. Featured speakers included UGA faculty, representatives from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and regional civic leaders with expertise in preservation, community planning, and emergency management. The focus on flood recovery was in direct response to the impacts of Tropical Storm Alberto, which had produced extensive and destructive flooding over portions of Alabama, Georgia, and Florida the year prior. In addition to the hallmark design lectures and Your Town workshop for regional leaders, programming included case studies in disaster recovery from other southeastern areas – particularly in the context of managing historic districts and structures during and after severe weather events.
